How to Evaluate 2-Person Inflatable Kayaks
The best 2-person inflatable kayak is not always the longest, lightest or most expensive. The right choice comes down to what the kayak’s made from, how it’s shaped, how it moves, how stable and easy to turn it is and how well the layout suits the way you paddle.
Materials are a key component of kayak performance, durability and ease of use.
Drop-stitch is essential to look for if you want to find an inflatable kayak stiff enough to paddle like a hard-shell. Drop-stitch consists of two surfaces of reinforced PVC held together by thousands of tiny threads - when it’s inflated the threads pull the surfaces back toward each other, allowing for high-pressure inflation and tension. Kayaks made from drop-stitch will have the stiffness to move more efficiently through the water in the way that non-drop-stitch kayaks will not.
Fast-drying, high-grade reinforced PVC is key to ensuring both the long-term durability of your kayak and ease of use. Thick PVC will stand up to bumps and scrapes much better than thinner vinyl, and choosing a kayak skinned in PVC rather than with a fabric covering means it’s far less likely for mold to develop on the kayak in storage.
Stability is an important consideration for a 2-person kayak.
A wider, softly rounded hull usually feels more stable when getting in, sitting still and paddling casually. With two paddlers working together, increased stability means less effort is required to compensate for the other person’s sideways movement. This is especially useful for beginners, families, paddlers with pets and pairs with different ability or experience levels. A softly rounded hull (or what is known as a ‘multi-chine hull’) offers a good level of stability without sacrificing paddling efficiency.
Efficiency determines how much effort it takes to cover distance, and is influenced by materials and hull design.
Diamond shapes give the best balance of speed and stability. Longer, more streamlined kayaks usually glide further with each paddle stroke and track straighter over distance, whereas shorter, wider kayaks can feel easier to turn and are usually more stable, but they tend to give up some efficiency. A diamond-shaped hull that balances the length to naturally track straight with the width to maintain stability and maneuverability is a good middle ground to look for.
A stiffer hull will also provide better glide, as less of the paddling energy gets absorbed by the hull pushing against the water. As we mentioned above, your quickest route to getting a stiffer kayak is by choosing a model that includes drop-stitch, but there are also considerations around how the hull has been put together: drop-stitch surfaces that can move around or detach will provide less overall rigidity than a hull created as one shape with rigid angles.
Ease of use is a consideration that ensures setting up, packing down and carrying won’t be barriers to how often you use your kayak.
Easy setup means a kayak with high-quality valves that are all the same type and ideally located close to each other. Seats and footrests should clip in easily, and fewer additional moving parts or accessories makes the process much smoother and shorter.
PVC-skinned kayaks are faster to dry, which means you can deflate them and roll them up straight into the trunk, without additional drying time when you get home.
A backpack with comfortable straps and a full front opening is the easiest option for carrying your kayak when packed. The front-opening zipper that allows the entire backpack front to open makes it much easier to pack the kayak back in, and backpack straps provide more versatile carrying comfort than a shoulder strap.
Capacity determines the load-carrying ability of the kayak, paddler comfort and space for additional gear.
A higher weight capacity, which most drop-stitch hulls provide, gives you more flexibility in the use of your kayak, from casual recreation to multi-day trips.
Covered storage areas are useful for protecting gear from splashes, but if carrying additional gear is an important consideration for you, also look for above-deck bungee-corded areas and seatback pockets that provide extra storage space.
Adequate length for two paddlers is essential to ensure there’s enough legroom in the cockpit for paddler comfort - especially if either paddler is tall, opt for a longer kayak. You also want to look at whether the seat and footrest positions are easily adjustable to allow for the best legroom and proper weight distribution in the kayak.
Earlier, we also mentioned that there are some additional details to consider once you’ve narrowed down your list:
Convertibility: some 2-person kayaks are available with seat and footrest attachment points that allow the kayak to be easily converted from tandem to solo positioning. If you know you’re always going to be paddling as a duo, a dedicated tandem kayak will usually provide you with a better layout and comfort for two people. If you prefer ultimate flexibility, you may want to consider two solo kayaks for the best paddling performance. Otherwise, if you want the versatility to be able to paddle together, but also use the kayak solo or have extra space to load it up, a convertible kayak can be the perfect option. Check the length as some convertibles can be too short for two paddlers.
Valves: drop-stitch kayaks generally use high-pressure valves (often called ‘Halkey-Roberts’ or ‘push-push’ valves) and there’s not a lot of difference between brands or models. Make sure the particular valve used will be compatible with your pump if you’re going to be using one you already have, and also ensure you rinse the valves with fresh water after use because corrosion will often affect the metal in these parts first.
Supportive seats: seat preference can be a really individual thing. Look for a seat back high enough to provide support, with adjustable straps and a solid enough foam bottom to be comfortable. Whether you like additional height under the seat or not really depends on your own preference and is something that’s probably best adjusted aftermarket. We tend to avoid inflatable seats due to the increased setup time and wobble.
Adjustable footrests: the ability to adjust the footrest is key to ensuring you have something solid to push against that suits your body and will reduce fatigue in your core muscles. A solid foam footrest that sits in the middle of the cockpit is the most ergonomic option.
Strong handles: durable grab handles at the bow and stern of the kayak make 2-person kayaks much easier for two people to carry to the water loaded with paddles and gear.
Secure fin systems: a fin is essential for peak straight-line tracking - make sure it includes a pin that will ensure it doesn’t slide out while paddling.
